萨尔曼·鲁西迪爵士,印度裔英国作家,因1988年出版的小说《撒旦诗篇》引起极大争议。萨尔曼本人从小不信仰宗教,被其父视为伊斯兰教的“逆子”。祖父是一位乌尔都语诗人,父亲则是剑桥大学商业系的毕业生。14岁时,他被送到英国的格拉比学校读书。1964年他的父亲搬到巴基斯坦的卡拉奇居住。那时候正值印巴战争,鲁西迪继续在剑桥大学三一学院求学,攻读历史。 复杂的宗教、文化和社会背景,注定了他对“历史”、“政治”、“流亡”、“移民”、“混杂”、“文化翻译”、“边缘写作”等问题的热切关注。1981年,文学天赋不同凡响的他凭借第二部小说《午夜之子》获得了当年英国文坛最高奖项“布克奖”,却因作品触怒了印度前总理英迪拉.甘地而被印度当局禁止在国内发行。此后,其小说《羞耻》又因中伤巴基斯坦前总统齐亚.哈克以及著名的布托家族,而导致该书不仅在巴基斯坦遭禁,他本人也被指控犯有诽谤罪。
