约翰·杜威（Dewey.J.）,美国哲学家,生于1859年,逝于1952年,曾先后在密歇根大学和哥伦比亚大学执教。他一生著述甚丰。美国南伊利诺斯大学出版社分早期、中期、晚期出版了他的三个系列的文集,共有37卷,内容涉及哲学、教育学、心理学、逻辑学等学术领域。他的许多著作很早就被翻译成了中文。但是,中国学术界一般只是将杜威看成是一位实用主义哲学家和教育学家,对他的美学介绍不多。而在国外,特别是在最近一二十年里,杜威的美学受到广泛的重视。这本《艺术即经验》,是他的美学代表作。
