米尔顿•迈耶（Milton Mayer, 1908—1986）

德裔美国犹太人,记者、教育家、杂志专栏作家。因其卓有见识却备受争议的文章而获乔治•波尔克国际报道奖和本杰明•富兰克林新闻奖。除本书外,另著有《兽类的本性》（The Nature of the Beast）,《不可能的艺术：对捷克反抗的研究》（The Art of the Impossible: a Study of the Czech Resistance）,《一个人能做什么?》（What Can a Man Do?）等,以及合著《教育中的革命》（The Revolution in Education）。

迈耶出生于芝加哥,在犹太教改革派影响下长大。高中毕业于恩格尔伍德中学,受过以拉丁语等古典语言为主的古典教育。1925—1928年,于芝加哥大学学习,但未获得学位。1928—1929年,在美联社、《芝加哥晚邮报》和《芝加哥晚间美国人报》担任记者。曾任教于芝加哥大学、马萨诸塞州立大学、路易斯维尔大学以及美国之外的一些大学,并担任民主机构研究中心的顾问。1955年,迈耶出版了最具影响力的著作：《他们以为他们是自由的》。在德国为本书做调查期间,他成为贵格派教徒,其后又作为反战人士闻名于世。1986年,迈耶逝世于加利福尼亚的卡梅尔小镇。
