颜清湟,1937年出生于福建永春,1956年毕业于吉隆坡尊孔中学,1960年毕业于新加坡南洋大学历史系名列前茅。1965年3月获坎贝拉澳大利亚国立大学奖学金进入该大学远东历史系攻读,1969年获博士学位。旋执教于南澳大利亚阿德雷德大学(TheUniversity of Adelaide)历史系 任讲师职。1976年升任高级讲师,1987年提升为教授(Reader)。1989-1990年出任香港大学历史系讲座教授兼主任(Chair Professor and Head of the Department),是首位华人荣任该职位者。 2000年8月受邀为首任新加坡南洋理工大学陈六使讲座教授,现任阿德雷德大学历史系兼任教授。
